In April 2006, the City of Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department contracted with the Charlottesville Community Design Center (CCDC) to facilitate a community design process for the future of Meade Park. Meade Park was chosen specifically because its pool facility is over 30 years old and is in dire need of updating. Before spending money on costly renovations, the City Council wished to engage the surrounding neighborhoods in a process that would generate conceptual designs, which would inform the council in their decision how to best serve citizens who use Meade Park.

The goals of the community design process were to:

* Determine the needs and goals for Meade Park with neighbors and City residents.
* Position the redesign of Meade Park within the larger goals of the Charlottesville Park and Recreation Master Plan.
* Develop consensus amongst stakeholders on vision and direction.

The process of arriving at these stated goals included a community design process, beginning in April 2006, with a final recommendation and exhibition completed in August 2006.

Building on these contextual background resources, CCDC facilitated a community design process that brought together designers from the professional and academic community with city residents towards the goal of reaching consensus on the vision for and redesign of Meade Park:

* Community Meetings, Design Workshops and Survey to determine needs and priorities.
* Conceptual Design - two basic schemes to promote understanding of the options
* Workshops with local elementary schools to understand needs, interests and ideas of young park users
